OpenAI is turning ChatGPT advertising from a static placement into a more conversational sales channel. In a September 16, 2026 announcement, the company introduced Sponsored Agents, natural-language campaign management, AI-assisted ad creation, and integrations with HubSpot and Shopify. The changes are significant, but availability remains limited and businesses should not treat the launch as proof of better sales performance.
What Sponsored Agents change
A Sponsored Agent lets a person voluntarily open a conversation with a business after clicking a clearly labelled ad in ChatGPT. The person can ask follow-up questions and then visit the advertiser’s website. OpenAI says this sponsored conversation is separate from ChatGPT’s independent answer and from the original conversation.
That separation matters. In its advertising principles, OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers, conversations are not sold to advertisers, and users can turn off personalisation. Those are company commitments rather than an independent audit, so advertisers and users should still watch how the product behaves in practice.
Sponsored Agents are currently being tested only with select advertisers in the United States. OpenAI has not confirmed availability in India in this announcement. Indian businesses should therefore treat the feature as something to monitor, not a channel they can necessarily activate today.
New tools for creating and managing campaigns
OpenAI says advertisers can now use natural-language prompts in ChatGPT with an Ads Manager plugin to create, update and analyse campaigns. Ads Manager can also suggest copy and imagery based on a landing page and campaign objective. A separate opt-in feature can adapt existing headlines and descriptions to a conversation’s context and translate them to a user’s preferred language.
The human-control detail is important: suggested copy and images can be reviewed and edited before they are added to a campaign. Businesses should preserve that review step. An AI-generated line can still invent a discount, overstate a product benefit or translate a regulated claim incorrectly.
HubSpot and Shopify connections
HubSpot users can connect a ChatGPT Ads account to create ads, track performance and follow up on leads inside HubSpot. For ecommerce, a ChatGPT Ads app is listed in the Shopify App Store. OpenAI says U.S.-based Shopify merchants gained access on September 16, with international availability planned from September 23 only in markets where ChatGPT Ads is available.
The announcement does not publish ad pricing, minimum budgets or a complete country list. Those details should be checked inside the advertiser account before committing money. The integration also does not guarantee that product data is accurate: merchants still need to maintain titles, variants, stock, delivery terms, return policies and landing pages.
A practical readiness checklist
Businesses interested in conversational ads can prepare without launching a campaign:
- Audit the product catalogue and remove outdated prices, claims and availability.
- Write approved answers for shipping, returns, warranties and common suitability questions.
- Define which questions the sponsored agent must escalate to a human.
- Test different phrasings, translations and edge cases before approving campaign material.
- Use clear tracking rules and compare qualified leads or completed sales, not just conversations.
- Review privacy, consent and advertising requirements for every target market.
A hypothetical furniture seller, for example, could let shoppers ask whether a table fits a room or how its finish should be maintained. The business would still need to verify dimensions, materials, care instructions and delivery regions. AI can make the conversation easier; it cannot replace accurate source data or customer-service responsibility.
Why this launch matters
The broader shift is from ads that merely attract a click to ads that can answer questions before the click. That may help shoppers evaluate products, while giving advertisers a new interface for campaign work. It also creates new risks: sponsored answers can feel authoritative, automated customisation can introduce unsupported claims, and limited availability can be mistaken for a global launch.
The sensible approach is a controlled pilot with approved product facts, human review and modest budgets. Results will depend on audience fit, data quality, creative execution and the platform’s actual reach—not on the presence of an AI agent alone.
